Why Become a Member?
It's a great question to ask – why does church membership matter?
We believe church membership is important because of what the Church is called to be – we're called to extend God’s kingdom into the world by living sacrificially for one another and for the world around us.
WHAT IS THE CHURCH IN THE FIRST PLACE?
In the New Testament the Church is described as being one, we are unified, with Jesus Christ, and by virtue of that relationship we too are members of one another. We belong one to another. We're one body, one family, devoted to the mission of God in the world.
Membership is about taking this seriously. It pushes back against the consumerism of our culture and reminds us that the Church doesn't exist for us, we exist for it. To be a disciple is to be caught up in a Story much bigger than our own individual lives and preferences. We can easily talk about why we attend a certain church in the same way we talk about our favorite restaurant – I like the teaching, or the children's activities, or the worship style. These things are perfectly good and wonderful to enjoy, but neither of them recognize the New Testament's picture of what the Church is in Christ.
THE CHURCH IS A PEOPLE WITH A PURPOSE
Church membership is a commitment, not just to attend church meetings, but to belong and participate in Christ's mission to the world and to one another. Members recognize that they're called to be a part of God’s family expressed through the local church. This commitment of membership is a commitment to serve together in the mission of God.
The process of becoming a member at Rockwall Pres involves four things:
1. Personal profession of faith in Christ
2. Participate in the Intro to RPC Class
3. Apply and Interview with an elder in the church
4. Taking the membership vows before the church body
We value this process in that it gives us an opportunity to know you more. It also allows you to get to know us, as you commit to the life of our church body.
We believe church membership is only for professing Christians.
Being a member means that you are submitting to the authority of the church and committing to serve the mission of the church, ultimately under Christ’s headship. The church is described as one body with Christ as the head. So how can one be a member of a church without first submitting to Christ as their Lord and Savior?
While membership requires professed faith in Christ, serving and enjoying the life of our church does not. While you may be considering the claims of the gospel, yet remain skeptical, we encourage anyone to be a part of the life and service that happens at Rockwall Pres.
2. Intro to
The Intro Class is a class for you to learn about who we are as a church.
In our Intro to RPC Class we will lead you through our mission statement, which expresses our DNA as a church body.
We discuss the gospel, the Reformed faith, baptism, membership, life in our church community, and ways you can be involved. Taking this class does not mean that you are intent on becoming a member. We welcome all who want to learn more about our church.
This class is a great opportunity for you to get to know our leadership team and for us to learn more about you and your family. The Intro Class is offered several times per year and will be announced in the worship service and on The City.
3. Application & Elder Interview
We want you to get to know our elders and they want to get to know you.
Each person seeking membership at RPC will be interviewed by an elder after completing the Intro Class. We also ask for a short membership application that tells us more about your story.
The elder interview is simple and low-key. It is an opportunity to learn more about you and to ask you five questions about your faith and your commitment to the church.
4. Membership Vows
We present you to your new church family.
Upon completion of the membership process we present new members to our church body. The process is simple – we bring you and your family up front during a service and ask you the same five questions that you were asked in your elder interview.
This is an opportunity for the church to receive your commitment to them, but also for the church to commit to you. The church is a family. At Rockwall Pres we are a family that strives to be faithful to God’s Mission, and this can’t be done without committing ourselves to one another.
