Why Become a Member?

It's a great question to ask – why does church membership matter?

We believe church membership is important because of what the Church is called to be – we're called to extend God’s kingdom into the world by living sacrificially for one another and for the world around us.

In the New Testament the Church is described as being one. We are unified with Jesus Christ. By virtue of that relationship we too are members of one another. We're one body, one family, devoted to the mission of God in the world.

Membership is about taking this seriously.

It pushes back against the consumerism of our culture. It reminds us that the Church doesn't exist for us, we exist for it. To be a disciple is to be caught up in a Story that's far bigger than our own individual lives and preferences. We can easily talk about why we attend a certain church in the same way we talk about our favorite restaurant – I like the teaching, or the children's activities, or the worship style. These things are perfectly good and wonderful to enjoy, but neither of them recognize the New Testament's picture of what the Church is in Christ.

Church membership is a commitment, not just to attend church meetings, but to belong and participate in Christ's mission to the world. Members recognize they're called to be a part of God’s family expressed through the local church. This commitment of membership is a commitment to serve together in the mission of God.

Our Membership Process

Profess   >   Learn   >   Apply   >   Meet   >   Received

1. Profess

Members are believers

Being a member means that you are submitting to the authority of the church and committing to serve the mission of the church, ultimately under Christ’s headship. The church is described as one body with Christ as the head. So how can one be a member of a church without first submitting to Christ as their Lord and Savior?

While membership requires professed faith in Christ, serving and enjoying the life of our church does not. While you may be considering the claims of the gospel, yet remain skeptical, we encourage anyone to be a part of the life and service that happens at Rockwall Pres.

2. Learn

Members know who we are

What's the Intro Class?

In our Intro to RPC Class we will lead you through our mission statement, which expresses our DNA as a church body.

We discuss the gospel, the Reformed faith, baptism, membership, life in our church community, and ways you can be involved. Taking this class does not mean that you are intent on becoming a member. We welcome all who want to learn more about our church.

This class is a great opportunity for you to get to know our leadership team and for us to learn more about you and your family. The Intro Class is offered three times per year and will be announced in the worship service and on Realm.

3.  Apply

Members take initiative

The idea of an application sounds more daunting than it is – the goal is to allow those seeking membership the opportunity to briefly share their understanding of the gospel, how they came to know Jesus Christ, and why they chose Rockwall Pres.

The application is short and take around 10–15 minutes.

4. Meet

Members have a story

Each person seeking membership at RPC will be contacted by an elder after completing the application. The elder interview is simple and low-key. It's an opportunity to learn more about you. What's your story and where do you come from? How did you come to know Christ? How did you end up at Rockwall Pres? We believe each person in our church is worth knowing because they are loved by Christ.

At the end of the meeting, the elder will ask you the five membership questions. After you affirm those vows you are officially a member at Rockwall Pres.

5. Membership Sunday

Members are HOME

Upon completion of the membership process we present new members to our church body. The process is simple – we bring you and your family up front during a service and ask you the same five questions that you were asked in your elder interview.

This is an opportunity for the church to receive your commitment to them, but also for the church to commit to you. The church is a family. At Rockwall Pres we are a family that strives to be faithful to God’s Mission, and this can’t be done without committing ourselves to one another.

Our Membership Vows

  1. Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope except in His sovereign mercy?
  2. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the Gospel?
  3. Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes the followers of Christ?
  4. Do you promise to support the church in its worship and work to the best of your ability?
  5. Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the church, and promise to study its purity and peace?
